Scrap metal pickup in Hillcrest, and what comes out of it
Hillcrest is the closest suburb on our run, barely six minutes from the yard gate, which is why it is usually the first or last stop of the day.
Hillcrest was built largely as South Australian Housing Trust stock, and the wide linear reserves that cut across the suburb are not parkland by design -- they are the cleared corridor of a Tea Tree Gully railway line that was proposed in the 1950s and never built. From 1993 the state government began replacing much of the older Housing SA housing here, taking the suburb from mostly weatherboard homes on large blocks to smaller dwellings on smaller ones.
That rebuild programme has never really stopped, and it is the reason Hillcrest produces more demolition metal per street than anywhere else we collect from. A weatherboard house coming down gives up galvanised roof sheeting, old steel guttering and downpipes, a copper hot water cylinder and usually a wall furnace. If you are clearing a block here, call before the skip arrives -- the copper and brass in a 1950s house is worth more than the skip costs.
Most Hillcrest blocks are the post-1993 rebuilds, which means narrower frontages and less room on the verge than the old weatherboard blocks had. If the metal is behind a gate or down the side, say so when you call and we will bring the smaller vehicle. The linear reserves make some of these streets awkward to loop back around, so a street number is worth more to us than a cross street.
We come up Grand Junction Road and are on site inside ten minutes, so a Hillcrest job can usually be done the same morning you call.

Frequently asked questions - Hillcrest
How quickly can you get to Hillcrest?
Hillcrest is the shortest run we do. We are about six minutes away at 35 Jacobsen Cres in Holden Hill, so a morning call is almost always a same-day pickup.
Can you take metal from a Housing SA rebuild in Hillcrest?
Yes, and it is a lot of what we do here. Roof sheeting, guttering, hot water cylinders, old wall furnaces and copper pipe all have value. We just need the owner or builder to be the one asking us to take it.
Why does Hillcrest have so much demolition metal?
Because the suburb has been rebuilding since 1993, when the state government started replacing the older Housing SA stock. Weatherboard houses on big blocks have been coming down and smaller homes going up ever since, and every one of those gives up roofing, guttering and a copper cylinder.
Do I need to be home when you collect in Hillcrest?
Not always, but it helps. If the metal is out the front and you are happy with a bank transfer we can weigh and pay without you there. Most Hillcrest jobs are rebuilds though, and on a building site we would rather have the owner or the builder present so there is no argument later about whose metal it was.
Is it worth separating the roof sheeting from the rest?
On a Hillcrest demolition, yes. Galvanised roof sheeting is low value per kilo but there is a lot of it, and keeping it off the copper means the copper gets paid as copper. If it has all gone in one heap already we will still sort it, it just takes longer on site.
